10,000 Maniacs History
10,000 Maniacs is an American alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Jamestown, New York. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Natalie Merchant, guitarist Robert Buck, bassist Steven Gustafson, drummer Jerry Augustyniak, and keyboardist Dennis Drew. The band's name is derived from a line in the film 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' They gained significant attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their blend of folk rock and alternative music, characterized by Merchant's distinctive vocals and the band's melodic instrumentation. Their breakthrough album, 'In My Tribe,' released in 1987, included hits like 'What's the Matter Here?' and 'Like the Weather.' The band became known for their engaging live performances, which often featured a mix of their own songs and covers, presented with an energetic and heartfelt delivery. Following the departure of Merchant in 1993 to pursue a solo career, the band continued to perform and record with different lead vocalists, maintaining a dedicated fan base. Over the years, they have released several albums, including 'Our Time in Eden' and 'Love Among the Ruins,' and have toured extensively, showcasing their evolving sound while honoring their roots in the live concert scene.
