Formation of the Band

Metallica was formed in Los Angeles through a newspaper advertisement put out by Lars Ulrich. Hugh Tanner and James Hetfield responded to this ad and five months later, Metallica was born. Their first song, “Hit the Lights” managed to create quite a buzz in the industry. Soon after this, the band got its first taste of live performance when they opened  for the British heavy metal group, Saxon. As their fame began to grow, they added more members to their lineup. Soon they were ready to record their debut album, under Megaforce Records.

Music of Metallica

The first album by the band, Kill ‘Em All, was released to a mixed response. Even though it was not much of a financial success, it did help the band establish itself in the underground metal music scene. Metallica’s rise to success was slow but steady. With their third album, Master of Puppets, reaching number 29 on the Billboard 200 and spending 72 weeks on the charts, Metallica was well on its way to super stardom.

After the death of bassist Cliff Burton, in a road accident, the band regrouped and hired a new member after multiple auditions. Their first studio album after Burton was called …And Justice for All (1988). This album entered the top 10 and was certified Platinum within weeks.

Major Success with Metallica

It was the release of the band’s fifth studio album that put them on the worldwide music map and got them major success. Also known as The Black Album, Metallica was a compilation that cost $1 million to make, but upon its release in 1991, it debuted at number one in ten countries, selling around 650,000 units in the US within the first week. The success of the album brought Metallica into the limelight and made them a household name in the US. The tour for this album lasted more than three years and helped make Metallica the 25th best-selling album in the US.

After Metallica, the band released several albums, followed by the 2003 album, St. Anger. The eight studio album by the band debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with its title track winning the Grammy for the Best Metal Performance in 2004.
