The Lamar Cardinals are the athletic teams representing Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Founded in 1923, Lamar has a rich history in college sports, becoming a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1982. Initially, the university's athletic teams were known as the 'Cardinals,' inspired by the vibrant red color of the school. The university's athletic program has evolved significantly over the years, with the Cardinals competing across various sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. The football program, which began in 1938, enjoyed considerable success until its discontinuation after the 1989 season.
