Blues – A Distinct Music Form
An African-American music style, blues is deeply rooted in sultry melodies and lyrical emotions. The term “felling blue” is derived from this music genre which is used in expressing longing for loved one, anguish and sadness. Typically a blues performance is meant for a listener to overcome the feeling of despair and feel good.
But blues is not all about unhappiness. The genre also celebrates success and pleasure through its raucous beats. Historically, blues gained popularity after 1920, coinciding with the rise of “race records” targeted specifically for the African American record buyers. Creators of the classic blues, these vaudeville style performers would blend up-tempo sounds of jazz with blues structures.
Some of the earliest singers of blues were females as names like Gertrude “Ma” Rainey and Bessie Smith stand out. “Mother of the Blues”, Rainey popularized authentic blues music and enjoyed mass fame during the blues craze of the 20s. It was Rainey who introduced Bessie Smith to the genre and acted as her vocal coach.
In the mid 20s, country-blues genre started gaining popularity. It blended many regional styles like Southeast’s Piedmont blues, Texas blues as well as Mississippi’s delta blues. Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson and Charley Patton were among the early country-blues singers who incorporated simple percussion and harmonica.
With time blues music evolved, drawing in urban influences like electrical instruments and pyrotechnics of rock music. Musicians like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf and T-Bone Walker popularized the “urban blues” style.
Jazz – Presenting Cultural Diversity
Jazz is truly America. Reflecting cultural diversity, the genre takes in influences from all kinds of styles and personal expressions. Jazz is considered a melting pot where the American blues, European classical music and South American rhythms come together.
The father of contemporary jazz improvisation, Louis Armstrong took the genre to great heights with his playful energy and melodic trumpet solos. He introduced jazz music into popular venues in New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Kansas City. Even today jazz continues to be a developing art form as every artist brings their personal style of improvisation to the genre.
Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie developed the style harmonically and gave it both, technical and intellectual treatment. Their contribution has played an important role in shaping the genre.
