Expect the unexpected from Zhu. This electronic dance producer brings vibrant stage sets and intergalactic waves of sound to each live concert. Since 2016, Zhu has climbed the ranks of electronic dance musicians, collaborating with the genre’s icons such as Skrillex, A-Trak, and Gallant.
On a regular night in February of 2014, a track titled “Moves Like Ms. Jackson” surfaced on Soundcloud, created by an anonymous artist. The track was well received by electronic music blogs and reviewers. Two months later, an EP titled The Nightday was released by the same artist and earned the No. 1 play of the week spot on Triple J. It was difficult for Zhu to maintain his anonymity after the success of The Nightday’s first single, “Faded”. Pete Tong from BBC Radio 1 named the track an “Essential New Tune”. The song peaked at No. 12 on the US Dance/Electronic chart and was nominated for the Best Dance Recording Grammy Award in 2015.
Jake Udell, Zhu’s manager, cleared the air in a November 2014 interview about Zhu’s desire to remain anonymous. He explained that in such a “black and white” industry climate, Zhu’s race played a big deciding factor. Rather than put the limitations of race to the test, they decided it was more important for fans to focus on the music rather than who is behind it.
Zhu released a collaborative EP titled Genesis Series in 2015, featuring artists like Skrillex, Alunageorge, A-Trak, and more. “Working For It”, the lead collaboration with Skrillex and THEY, charted on the Top 40 list and certified platinum in Australia.
Zhu released “In the Morning” in 2016. After his Neon City Tour, he announced that the track would be the first single from his upcoming album, Generationwhy. He premiered the album at his closing set at Coachella 2016. His performance was praised by the New York Observer, saying that Ahu could be “the next Daft Punk”. The next year, he was invited to play a set at Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Later that year, he released Stardustexhalemarrakechdreams, his third EP. “Chasing Marrakech”, a single from the album, was featured in an Apple ad for the iPhone XS. Zhu released his second studio album on September 7th, 2018, comprising 14 tracks.
