Early Life & Influences
Born in 1991 as Jeffery Lamar Williams, Young Thug was interested in rap music from the beginning. Young Thug cites Lil Wayne as his biggest influence. Apart from him, he is said to be inspired by rappers like, Kanye West and Gucci Mane. He launched his career by putting out the first three installments of his mixtape series, ‘I Came from Nothing’ throughout 2011 and 2012. Young Thug was later spotted by Gucci Mane who without giving it a second thought signed him to his label, 1017 Brick Squad Records. He then churned out his fourth mixtape, ‘1017 Thug’ on February 23, 2013, to great critical reception. It was included in Rolling Stone’s list of the ’10 Mixtapes of 2013’ and also made it to FACT’s list of the ‘Best Mixtape of 2013.’ In the same year, complex declared him as one of the new rappers to watch out for.
In 2014, Young Thug released his fifth mixtape, ‘Black Portland’ before he spawned his first single, Stoner on February 4, 2014. The song was certified gold by the RIAA and landed at the thirteenth spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In addition, the song earned him a BET Hip Hop Award nomination for ‘Best Club Banger.’
Young Thug then went on to end the year by dropping another five mixtapes, including ‘Rich Gang: Tha Tour, Pt. 1’ which received four stars out of five from Complex and Rolling Stone. After a year, he put out another mixtape, ‘Barter 6.’ This brought him commercial success and became his first release to chart on the Billboard 200. It also contained a couple of singles out of which, Check went on to sell over five hundred thousand copies in the U.S.
Breakthrough & Recognition
Young Thug started to attain worldwide recognition in 2016. He began the year by treating his fans to new music in the form of his fourteenth mixtape, ‘I’m Up’ which came out on February 5th. Besides performing well in the United States, it also generated waves in Canada and consisted of collaborative tracks with rappers Quavo, Offset, Lil Durk and Trouble.
A month later, the third mixtape from his Slime Season series titled, ‘Slime Season 3’ reached the markets. It landed at the first and seventh spot on the Top Rap Albums and Billboard 200 respectively. The mixtape featured eight songs on the track-list and became huge critical hit as different publications posted positive reviews about it including AllMusic and Exclaim!
On August 26th, Young Thug released another successful mixtape, ‘Jeffery.’ It climbed the third spot on the Top Rap Albums and was influenced by the elements of pop and trap music. The mixtape was also included in the list of ‘The 50 Best Albums of 2016’ by Entertainment Weekly and received 82/100 rating from Metacritic. Plus, it produced two singles, Pick Up the Phone and Wyclef Jean. The former song went double platinum by the RIAA while the latter won him his first MTV Video Music Award.
There is no stopping him
Young Thug continued to make his mark in the hip-hop industry and spawned his next mixtape, ‘Beautiful Thugger Girls’ in June of 2017. It not only got great response in America but also charted in countries including France, New Zealand, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The mixtape also earned the approval of the critics.
Four months later, Young Thug returned with his last mixtape of the year titled, ‘Super Slimey.’ It became his highest charting effort to date as it debuted at the second spot on the Billboard 200 and yielded a single, Patek Water which has been streamed in excess of one million times on SoundCloud.
