About Wild Kratts
Wild Kratts is an American-Canadian children’s educational series. The animated series is created by Martin and Chris Kratt and has 5 seasons and 122 episodes to date. The show is produced by The Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Media Group and is presented by PBS in the US. The show is also broadcast in Canada, Latin America, Spain, UK, France, Australia, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Portugal, India, Middle East, Bosnia and Serbia.
Wild Kratts is mainly an educational show designed to add value and strengthen the concepts of ecology, biology and zoology among kids.
The show first aired on 3rd January 2011, with the latest season beginning on 24th July 2017 and still ongoing. The running time of each episode is nearly 25 minutes.
The Basic Plot
The main plot of each episode is typically to save the animals from a particular situation. It could be saving them from villains, human influences or confusion if there is a baby animal involved. Most of the episodes are centered on villains, however there are episodes that focus on some real world problems, either directly or indirectly. In addition to that, some episodes aim to change the way some creatures are generally viewed. For instance, bats and crocodiles are depicted as friendly rather than frightening.
In the series, The Kratt Brothers are helped by a programmer, Aviva, who invents various “creature power suits”. These power suits are designed to assist the brothers in achieving their goals. Another important character is Koki, the mechanic and computer expert, who deals with “Tortuga”.
As the show progresses, the viewers learn about various animals and their lives. The Kratt Brothers try to figure out ways out of various situations they find themselves in, making the viewers more knowledgeable.
The Cast of Wild Kratts
The main characters of the cast are Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt, voiced by the two creators themselves.
Chris Kratt: Chris is depicted as the exact opposite of his brother with his highly methodical approach in his understanding of the animals. He is organized and calm and is also an experienced climber.
Martin Kratt: Martin’s character has a heartier feel to it. He often assigns names to the animals he finds and gives the audience a chance to bond better with them. He is the funny one among the two brothers and is usually impulsive in his ways. He is disorganized and emotional and manages to keep things fun and light.
Aviva Corcovado (Athena Karkanis): Leader of the Tortuga gang, Aviva is also one of the main characters of the series, second in command to Martin and Chris. Her inventions, meant to assist the brothers in their endeavors, are mostly inspired by nature. Her competitive nature makes her a highly talented engineer and inventor.
Koki (Heather Bambrick): Koki is a mechanic and computer expert who is responsible for the computer database at the Tortuga HQ. She also manages the communications systems of Tortuga and maintains contact with the brothers when they are out on their missions.
Jimmy Z (Jonathan Malen): Jimmy Z is the pilot of the Tortuga HQ and is in charge of operating the ship’s teleporter. He is not very knowledgeable on animals, in comparison to the rest of the crew.
In addition to these main characters, the show also features some antagonists. Wild Kratts has a total of six villains – Zachary “Zach” Varmitech (Zachary Bennett), Donita Donata (Eva Almos), Dabio (Cory Doran), Gaston Gourmand (Zachary Bennett), Paisley Paver (Julie Lemieux) and Rex (Cory Doran).
The script of the show is usually written by the Kratts themselves or Eva Almos and Chris Roy. Most of the filming is done in Canada and in the US. The network PBS has dedicated almost $500,000 in developing the series.
The show makes frequent use of comedy devices such as slapstick comedy to keep things light. It is considered to be a mix of animation and live action.
