Warpaint is a psychedelic rock group formed by Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman and the Sossamon sisters, Lindberg and Shannyn. The band started their career by spending three years performing around Los Angeles before they began to pen down tracks for their first extended play ‘Exquisite Corpse.’ Produced by Jacob Bercovici, the EP hit the shelves in 2008 and was mixed by the former guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante. The extended play received encouraging response from the critics and included six songs out of which, Elephants featured in the independent horror film, ‘Siren’.
Following the release of ‘Exquisite Corpse,’ Shannyn Sossamon left the band to pursue her acting career and was replaced by the Australian drummer, Stella Mozgawa. The group then began to record their debut full-length studio effort, ‘The Fool.’ It was released on October 22, 2010 and Tom Biller was credited as the producer of this album. The record managed to make an impact in America as well as in some European countries including, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Influenced by alternative, experimental and art rock sound, ‘The Fool’ was loaded with nine great songs out of which, the group released, Undertow and Shadows as singles. The album turned out to be an enormous critical success and received praise from NME’s Laura Snapes who wrote,
“The dark purple rumble and hypnotic coo of their vocals swim along, dragging the listener beneath its beguiling surface into a swathe of subtle time changes and guitar prone to sudden swan dives into heart-stabbing gold arcs from oil painting-thick landscapes.”
Climbing to the Top
A year after ‘The Fool’, Warpaint hinted in an interview with NME that they have started working on their sophomore album. The quartet then remained busy for two years writing new material and on January 17, 2014, they released their self-titled studio effort. The album charted in all the major countries of the world and was completely different from their first record in terms of sound as it featured elements of dream pop and indie rock.
‘Warpaint’ became a commercial hit and contained a single, Love to Die which was used in a Calvin Klein advertisement. The girls then embarked on a tour to promote their second album in 2015 after which, every member of the band kicked off their separate projects. Wayman founded a supergroup, BOSS with Hot Chip’s Sarah Jones and All We Are’s Guro Gikling; Kokal went on to contribute vocals for Paul Bergmann’s EP, ‘Romantic Thoughts’; Lindberg released her first solo record, ‘Right On!’; and Mozgawa began recording music with Kurt Vile and Andy Clockwise. This created speculation that the band is breaking-up but Warpaint put an end to rumors by releasing their latest single, New Song on August 1, 2016.
One month later, the group churned out its third studio album, ‘Heads Up.’ It received 74/100 rating from Metacritic and made it to the American Songwriter’s list of the ‘Top 50 Albums of 2016.’ Plus, it was also included in the list of ‘Album of the Year’ by Rough Trade. The record consisted of eleven songs and peaked at the thirteenth spot on the UK Albums chart.
