Early Life & Influences
Trey Songz is the moniker of Tremaine Aldon Neverson who was born on November 28, 1984. Growing up, he listened to Jay-Z and called him as his biggest influence. He stated,
“Jay Z’s been an influence of mine since I was a young man.”
Apart from Jay Z, Songz is influenced by stars like, 50 Cent, Prince, and Usher.
Extremely shy in his childhood, Trey Songz never really thought of following a musical career. It was the constant encouragement of his friends and family which persuaded him to sing and at age 14, he discovered his vocal talents. Songz soon started to perform and before long, he was introduced to the record producer, Troy Taylor by his step-father which eventually led him to signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 2003.
Trey Songz then flew to New Jersey to record his first studio effort in 2004. During that time, he released many mixtapes under the alias, Prince of Virginia. On July 26, 2005, Songz finally put out his debut record, ‘I Gotta Make It.’ The album received four stars out of five from AllMusic and allowed him to enjoy national popularity. A year later, he recruited R. Kelly, Bryan Michael Cox, Stargate and Danja to help produce his sophomore record, ‘Trey Day.’ It hit the stores on October 2, 2007 and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album climbed the second spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and spawned four hit singles, Wonder Womer, Can’t Help But Wait, Last Time and Missin’ You.
Breakthrough & Recognition
Trey Songz began to notice his popularity soar in 2009 when he dropped his third studio album, ‘Ready.’ It featured collaborative tracks with some of the most successful stars of the industry including, Drake who appeared on two songs out of which, Successful was awarded gold certification by the RIAA. The single also made it to the Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘Best 25 Songs of 2009.’ The record turned out to be his first studio effort to sell more than a million copies in the United States and earned him a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Contemporary R&B Album.’
As ‘Ready’ was making waves all around the world, Songz started to work on his new studio project in early 2010 and on September 14th, he spawned his fourth studio record, ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure.’ To build the anticipation for the record, he released the lead single, Bottoms Up a couple of months prior to the release of the album. The song was certified four times platinum by the RIAA and became his most successful single to date. Other than this track, the record contained three more singles among which, Can’t Be Friends climbed the top of Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure’ was a critical hit as it earned rave reviews from USA Today, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and AllMusic.
