In 2016, they made waves once again when they dropped their first soundtrack album, ‘The Ghost of Christmas Eve.’ Produced by Michael Owen, Paul O’ Neill and Taro Meyer, the record featured ten songs, including O Holy Night which is a collaborative effort with Michael Crawford.
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra caught the attention of the music fraternity when they began touring in 1999. Since then, they have gone on to perform rock operas all over the world. The spectacle of their live performances cannot be put into words and it is something to experience firsthand. Early Life & Influences
Trans-Siberian Orchestra are inspired by some of the most successful names in rock music history like Alice Cooper, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Rush.
The late Paul O’Neill was the brain behind the formation of the band. When he decided to form the group, his goal was to take progressive rock music to a whole new level. He stated:
“The whole idea was to create a progressive rock band that would push the boundaries (of the genre) further than any group before... Way, way further.”
O’Neill was interested in rock music from a young age. He fell in love with Broadway musicals and became a fan of legendary stars, Harry Chapin and Jim Croce. He kicked off his career by playing guitar in two musicals, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Hair.’ Paul O’Neill later went on to become the manager of Scorpions, Aerosmith and AC/DC.
He then began working with heavy metal band, Savatage. He worked on quite a few of their albums like, ‘Hall of the Mountain King,’ ‘Gutter Ballet,’ ‘Dead Winter Dead’ and ‘Streets: A Rock Opera.’ While still working with Savatage, O’Neill became close friends with Jon Oliva, Robert Kinkel and Al Pitrelli who were members of the group. All three would later become an integral part of his grand vision, the Trans Siberian Orchestra.
Breakthrough & Recognition
In 1996, TSO signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and later the same year, they released their first studio album, ‘Christmas Eve and Other Stories.’ The record was a massive success globally and was certified three times platinum by the RIAA. It peaked at the third spot on the Top Holiday Albums chart and made them extremely famous in the United States. The critics also praised the record, with AllMusic giving it four stars out of five.
‘Christmas Eve and Other Stories’ marked an incredible start to TSO’s journey. The band continued to surprise the world with its music and dropped its sophomore album, ‘The Christmas Attic’ in 1998. It managed to sell more than one million copies in the US and offered two singles including, Christmas Canon which landed at the ninth spot on the Holiday 100 chart. In 2016, this song was ranked at the sixth spot in SoundScan’s list of the ‘All-time Best Selling Christmas/ holiday Digital Singles.’
Trans-Siberian Orchestra kept producing hits and released two more studio efforts in the early 2000s, ‘Beethoven’s Last Night’ and ‘The Lost Christmas Eve.’ Both albums showcased their exceptional range and featured great symphonic rock music. The latter racked up sales of over two million in the United States and spawned a single, Wizards in Winter which was used in Jordan’s Furniture Christmas LITE Show in 2009.
TSO has become one of the biggest progressive rock groups in history. They have accumulated albums sales of more than ten million, worldwide. They have also impressed critics with their hard hitting sounds.
