It ain’t bragging if you can back it up - Muhammad Ali

Tory Lanez has been called a lot of things in his career, arrogant being one of them. What others perceive as arrogance is self-confidence for Lanez. Besides, he has delivered and done his talking through music. It is safe to say, he has backed it up.

Tory Lanez journey to stardom is borne out of adversity and that too of the worst kind. It was his mother’s passing away that planted the seeds for him to become the star he is today. He has taken on hip-hop’s A-list and has added something new to the genre. He has received recognition for his efforts too and that is why Tory Lanez tickets are highly sought after commodities whenever he performs live.

The Early Years

Real name, Daystar Peterson, Tory Lanez was born in Toronto, Canada. The family was however settled in Montreal but they all packed up and shifted to Miami. Lanez used to practice a lot to hone his rapping skills as a child. Then all of a sudden, when he was just eleven years old, tragedy struck as his mother passed away.

“My mom died when I was 11 years old. At the time I was being very bad because I didn’t know how to express myself. Music gave me an outlet to express myself and channel that anger.”

His father became a missionary and minister and they used to move around the US a lot. They settled in Atlanta where Lanez met Hakeem a friend of his who would give him the name Lanez. Lanez was struggling to cope with his mother’s passing away and that is when he found solace in music and his whole outlook toward life changed.

The Start

In 2009, Lanez came out with his first mixtape titled “T.L 2 T.O.” At the same time, he started coming up with his own videos and began to upload the same on YouTube. Sean Kingston saw one of those videos and got in touch with him. This is how Lanez got to perform with Justin Bieber on one of his tours. In 2010, Lanez came out with quite a few mixtapes.

He then signed a recording deal with Time is Money Entertainment which was owned by Kingston and celebrated that by releasing more mixtapes. He left shortly afterwards though to go independent. He also collaborated with stars like Rockie Fresh and G-Eazy. He also came out with a track titled Teyana which was his tribute to none other than Teyana Taylor.

He released a few more tracks, collaborated with a few more artists and also hit the road for his inaugural tour as a headlining act. The trek was titled the “Lost Cause Tour” and he released some more mixtapes after that.

The Debut Album

The time had come for Tory Lanez to release his first studio album. He released a teaser, Say It on July 31, 2015. Lanez also signed with Interscope Records and Mad Love Records.

His debut album was titled “I Told You” and it hit the music stores on August 19, 2016. It did fairly well both critically and commercially. AllMusic gave it three stars out of five and Now did the same. The record also went to the fourth position on the US Billboard 200 on its debut. It also peaked at the second spot on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and went on to chart in other countries too.
