Any franchise that’s been around for 94 years will experience some ups and some downs. The Toronto Maple Leafs can attest to this statement as fact. Since entering the NHL in 1917, they’ve won 13 Stanley Cup Finals and made 64 playoff appearances. Unfortunately, the downs this franchise has seen have mostly been in recent seasons.
Their last Stanley Cup championship came in 1967, which isn’t great. But more importantly, their last playoff appearance was in 2004, making the past seven seasons a nightmare for their loyal fan base.
Looking To Make The Playoffs
Even though the Maple Leafs have failed to make the playoffs these last few years, that doesn’t mean they lack talented pieces. All-Star center Phil Kessel led the team with 82 points last year, and 29-year-old center Joffrey Lupul is coming off a 67 point season that was by far the best of his career.
Defenseman Dion Phaneuf had a down year last season, but he has the ability to be one of the best players at his position in the entire NHL. Him getting back to that incredible level is important, because the Maple Leafs were porous on defense last year, allowing the second highest number of goals in the league.
