Early Years & Influences

Tim McGraw was born in Delhi, Louisiana and raised in various towns of the state. Brought up by his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann D'Agostino, McGraw is a biological son of Tug McGraw, a former star pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets.

In his younger years, McGraw showed no interest in music. Instead, he was crazy about baseball and even got into the University of Louisiana at Monroe on a baseball scholarship. It was here that he began playing the guitar and performed for some extra cash. While playing baseball, he suffered a knee injury, which consequently ended his professional baseball dreams.

As a country music lover, McGraw was highly inspired by Keith Whitley, a famous country music singer. He was so impressed with Whitley that he moved to Nashville the day his idol died in 1989.

Breakthrough & Recognition

Once in Nashville, it was Tug McGraw’s contacts that helped Tim McGraw sign his first record deal. Signed with Curb Records in 1990, McGraw released his first single, “What Room Was the Holiday In” the year after. His first attempt, however, failed to impress and did not chart on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.

In 1993, McGraw released his self-titled, debut studio album. In addition to “What Room Was the Holiday In” the album included singles, “Memory Lane,” “Welcome to the Club” and “Two Steppin’ Mind.” While the album failed to chart, it did make AllMusic observe that McGraw showed “roots of [his] individuality”,.

Famous Albums & Songs

The big break for McGraw came in 1994 with the release of his sophomore album, Not a Moment Too Soon. Charting at the number one spot on the Top Country Albums, Billboard 200 and Canadian Country Charts, the album sold over 6 million records in the US alone and was therefore certified six times Platinum. In addition to being a commercial blockbuster, Not a Moment Too Soon also impressed the critics with AllMusic giving it 3 stars. “Not a Moment Too Soon,” “Don’t Take the Girl” and “Indian Outlaw” were some of the biggest hit singles included in this album.

Tim McGraw would go on to release many multi-Platinum albums in his career, but none matched the success of Not a Moment Too Soon. His other notable albums are, Live Like You Were Dying, Everywhere, All I Want, A Place in the Sun, Set This Circus Down, and Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors.

These albums gave McGraw some of the biggest hits. These include “Live Like You Were Dying,” “Grown Men Don’t Cry,” “If You’re Reading This,” “It’s Your Love (With Faith Hill),” “Angry All the Time,” “The Cowboy in Me,” “Highway Don’t Care,” “My Next Thirty Years,” “Just to See You Smile” and “Something Like That.”

Did you know, “Something Like That” was the most-played song on country radio throughout the entire decade of 2000-2010?

“It’s Your Love” with Faith Hill is one of the most popular McGraw-Hill duets. This romantic song stayed at the top of the charts for a six full weeks and is part of the setlist for Soul2Soul: The World Tour.
