Originally written by Kenneth Lonergan in 1996, This is Our Youth tells the story of three privileged, yet painfully misguided, teens living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Previous production Off-Broadway featured some brilliant casting: Hayden Christensen, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Freddie Prince Jr., Anna Paquin and Summer Phoenix to name a few. This year’s production is just as splendid as it premiers on the Great White Way.
It’s March of 1982. Dennis Ziegler (Kieran Culkin) sits in his studio apartment, held beautifully inside Broadway’s Cort Theatre by design of Todd Rosenthal. Upon arrival of his pal and partner in crime, Warren Straub- played by the well-known Michael Cera-, the boys find themselves in possession of 15,000 dollars. The audience soon discovers that Warren has stolen it from his despised tycoon father. There’s some talk of drug-dealing and then, of course, there’s the girl. Precocious fashion student Jessica Goldman (Tavi Gevinson) arrives just in time to join the boys in the anxious criticism of their parents, an interesting comparison of which has been made to J.D. Salinger’s study of “revolt against adult phoniness”. Dancing and thrashing all over the apartment, the three teens are so obviously self-conscious while trying desperately to be cool and comfortable.
This is Our Youth submerges it’s audience into a brutally honest world where kids figure out what they are, all the while realizing what they never want to be. With ScoreBig, you save on every This is Our Youth ticket, everyday.
