The xx was borne out of friendship and it has lasted the distance to now become one of the most sensational indie pop bands on the planet. The members of the group met during their school days and the bond they developed show in the music they make.

The members first met during their time at the Elliot School. It is the same school that produced stars like Matt Monro, Four Tet and Pierce Brosnan. Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Slim basically formed the band when they were just fifteen years old. When they began performing in 2005, they were joined by Baria Qureshi. Jamie Smith then became a part of the line-up one year later.
They released their debut album titled “xx” through the independent label, Young Turks. The record hit the music stores on August 17, 2009 and went on to become a critical success. It received four stars out of five from AllMusic, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and The Irish Times. The album made it to the second spot on NME’s list of the album of the year and to the third position on the same list by Pitchfork.
The band took a little while to chart though. It was announced that the album has been nominated for the Mercury Prize, an award it won. That announcement triggered a sharp increase in the album’s sales and charted in different countries. The album recorded gold level sales in the US, Germany, Belgium and Canada. It also went platinum in the UK.
Stamping Their Authority
The xx then went on a tour in August of 2009. Later that year, Qureshi quit the band. They started 2010 by performing at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival and then proceeded to take the stage at the Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Sasquatch and Coachella later the same year.
Their next album “Coexist” was released on November 5, 2012 and it turned out to be another critical success story. Out of five, it got three and a half stars from AllMusic and Rolling Stone. The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian both gave it four stars out of five.
The album also was a massive hit on the commercial front. It peaked at number one on both the US Top Alternative Albums chart and the US Independent Albums chart. On the US Billboard 200, it climbed to number five. It went to number one in the UK, Switzerland, Portugal, New Zealand and Belgium. In Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark and the Netherland, Coexist made it to the Top 10. The album also went gold in the US, Germany, Canada and Belgium.
Their third album, “I See You” hit the music stores on January 13, 2017 and just like its two predecessors, it received widespread critical acclaim. AllMusic, The Guardian, The Independent, NME and Q Magazine all deemed it good enough to merit four stars out of five.
Commercially, it climbed to the top spot on the US Independent Albums, the US Top Alternative Albums and the US Top Rock Albums chart. On top of that, the album went to number two on the Billboard 200 and to the top spot on the UK Albums chart. The album also peaked on Top 10 positions in countries like Switzerland, Sweden, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and Austria.
