The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most successful Broadway musicals ever put to stage. It’s grossed over $5.6 billion worldwide, and has been viewed by over 130 million people. As if that isn’t enough evidence that it’s worth a viewing, the musical has been staged over 10,000 times on Broadway, making it by far the longest running show in history (and the second longest musical in West End history).
An All-Time Success
Originally scored and written by the legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, Phantom first took the stage on London’s West End Theatre in 1986 before moving to New York City’s Broadway two years later.
The show met instantaneous success. In 1986, it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical, and in 1988, it won a Tony Award acknowledging it for the same honor.
The idea to stage Phantom as a musical first occurred when Webber was desperately trying to write a romantic story. He decided adapting The Phantom of the Opera from its original format as a book (and then later two motion pictures) to the theatre would be difficult, but worth the challenge.
His decision was the right one, as the musical has stood the test of time and continues to inspire audiences to this day.
