About the Show
Plot - The story of The Lion King revolves around the character of Simba, a young lion. Born into the royal family in the African Pride Lands, Simba spends his time exploring the jungle and admiring his father Mufasa, the king of the jungle. Mufasa’s brother Scar second in line to the throne (after Simba).
Simba’s life takes a big turn when his uncle Scar kills his father in order to gain power and forces the young lion to flee from the jungle. Upon realizing the dynamics of the situation, Simba decides to take revenge and sets off to conquer the kingdom back along with his friends Pumbaa and Timon. As the story unfolds further, it takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster ride of thrill, laughter and excitement.
Highlights - The music is inspired by African rhythms. Among the most famous songs in the musical are ‘Circle of Life,’ ‘Can you Feel the Love Tonight,’ ‘The Madness of King Scar’ and ‘Hakuna Matata.’ The first act consists of twelve songs while the second comprises of nine. And although some songs are more popular than the rest, each track holds a unique place in the story. What makes them further enjoyable is the way they are choreographed. The visuals of the African beasts, flocks of birds, tall giraffes and dancing gazelles moving through the aisles calls in for roars of applause on the part of the audience.
From the costume and stage design to the choreography and music, each aspect of the musical has been taken care of with attention to detail. Further the phenomenal performances of actors Jelani Remy, L. Steven Taylor, Stephen Carlile and others make the show a treat to experience.
Reviews, Awards and Accolades
Twenty years on since its premiere, The Lion King musical has not lost its appeal one bit. The stunning, wildly imaginative production is still enjoyed by audiences, old and young. Besides being a top-grossing musical, it has received nods from the critics as well. Entertainment Weekly described it as
“The breathtakingly staged Broadway adaptation of Disney's king of the cartoon jungle is an instant theater classic,”
while the Newsday reviewed the show as “A jaw-dropping magnificent spectacle. The show and the playhouse are enchanting. The unprecedented production is worth every penny. If this is Disney's idea of a theme park, we are delighted to report that the theme is quality.”
During the award season in 1998, the Lion King swept almost all major awards. It bagged eight Drama Desk Awards out of the twelve nominations received and six Tony Awards out of eleven nominations.

Besides the US, several productions of the play have been performed in different parts of the world and have bagged numerous theatre awards as well. This includes the esteemed Oliver Award.
