Broadway’s much anticipated new musical, The Last Ship, is finally here! With music written by 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting, it’s no surprise that the pre-Broadway release in Chicago has received phenomenal reviews. This inspirational story is based on books by Tony winner John Logan and Pulitzer Prize-winner Brian Yorkey, as well as the childhood experiences of Sting himself. Directed by renowned Joe Mantello (Wicked, Take Me Out and Assassins), and choreographed by Steven Hoggett (Once), this new musical is bound for success.
The story is set in Northeast England, in a town reliant upon the construction of ornate vessels built with pride by the men and women of Wallsend (it also happens to be Sting's actual hometown). After a 14-year absence, Gideon Fletcher (played by the celebrated Michael Esper) returns home to find his beloved yet malcontented town in shambles. The woman he once loved is engaged to someone else, and the shipyard is on the verge of ruin. Sting’s beautiful lyrics voiced by gritty and honest actors show their audience the true meaning of community in this compelling story sure to entertain.
In the land of modern musical theater that is rich with spectacle, The Last Ship is a raw, authentic approach to the classic song-and-dance. Although there is subdued-yet-impressive set design and an impressive steel ship that makes an appearance in the 3rd act, this show focuses on the human condition rather than the smoke and mirrors that Broadway is known for. Consider The Last Ship to be a mature, masculine, thought-provoking blip on the new musical radar.
