The music career of The Chainsmokers nearly ended before it even got started – thanks to one bad decision. In 2014, the rising DJ duo appeared on American Idol as a guest appearance, with just a single hit to their name called “#Selfie”. A performance that ended up being extremely cringeworthy, drew a lot of criticism from fans and fellow artists.
But in a major turn of fate, The Chainsmokers, with DJs Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, were on a rise to stardom that few could have predicted back in 2014.
Today, with multiple hit singles to their name, including “Don’t Let Me Go” and “Closer”, the DJ duo have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
Today, the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) artists are one of the most sought-after duos in the industry with lots of performances lined up in the coming months. Get The Chainsmokers tickets and make sure you experience their live music – you will truly be wowed!
Early Beginnings and Career
Initially, The Chainsmokers consisted of Alex Pall and another DJ, Rhett Bixler. After Bixler parted ways, Taggart joined in. They got into the music business by making remixes of songs by indie bands. In their early days, they also collaborated with the Indian actress, Priyanka Chopra on the single “Erase”.
Breakthrough
The duo got the chance to perform live for the first time, opening for Timeflies in September 2014. Their single “#Selfie”, became a viral sensation and helped the duo achieve breakthrough success. The single charted internationally and peaked on the Dance/Electronic Songs chart, giving the artists enough room to grow and make new music.
After the breakthrough success of this single, the duo was eventually signed on to Disruptor Records, a joint venture label with Sony Music Entertainment.
Bouquet, Collage and Continued Success
The duo got into the recording studio, working on their first EP, called Bouquet. The EP was released in early 2016 and featured singles such as “Until You Were Gone,” “New York City,” “Waterbed,” “Good Intentions” and “Roses.” “Don’t Let Me Down”, the follow-up single was released on 5th February, 2016 and featured the upcoming artist Daya. This single became an instant success for the duo. Two months later, they released another single called “Inside Out”, which featured the Swedish singer Charlee.
On 29th July, 2016, the duo released another mega hit single called “Closer” featuring Halsey. The single peaked at the top spot in both the UK and the US and charted in eleven other countries. “Closer” was also performed at the MTV VMAs in 2016 and helped The Chainsmokers attract more attention. The duo released another extended play called Collage on 4th November, 2016.
Recent Works of The Chainsmokers
In January 2017, the duo released another international hit single called “Paris”, which was certified gold in Canada. It also got a gold certification in the US, receiving more than 270 million streams on Spotify up till March 2017. The official video for the song, starring Martha Hunt, the American model, reached over 110 million views on YouTube.
In February 2017, the duo released another hit single – with Coldplay called “Something Just Like This”. The single got more than 9 million plays in one day, breaking the previous record in the category.
Memories…Do Not Open
The debut studio album by The Chainsmokers, called Memories…Do Not Open, was released on 7th April, 2017, through Columbia Records and Disruptor Records. The preceding singles from this album, “Paris” and “Something Just Like This” both entered the top 10 in multiple countries. The album itself opened at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling nearly 221,000 album-equivalent units and 166,000 in pure album sales.
The supporting tour for this album, called the Memories…Do Not Open Tour, kicked off on 13th April, 2017 and concluded on 24th October, 2017. The grand tour had a total of 6 legs, with 43 shows in North America, 12 in Europe, 11 in Asia and 5 in Oceania. The Memories…Do Not Open Tour helped establish The Chainsmokers as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry, with tickets selling faster than anyone would have imagined.
Influences and Style of Music
The duo makes mainly electronic dance music, although other sounds such as pop and hip-hop have been incorporated in their recent works. They have mentioned Pharrell Williams and the DJ Deadmau5 as having a major impact on the style of their music. Their spare, sharp beats have brought in a pop element into their music. The true musical style of the duo did not emerge until the release of their top 10 smash single “Roses”. The single “#Selfie” in a way was sort of a false start for The Chainsmokers, as far as musical style goes. The duo has also praised the alternative pop band, Twenty One Pilots, citing their work as really good music. Other groups and artists The Chainsmokers have mentioned as having an impact on their work include Blink-182, Max Martin, Taking Back Sunday, The xx, Taylor Swift and Explosions in the Sky.
Awards and Nominations
In a short period of time, The Chainsmokers have managed to have a big impact on the music industry. They have won a total of 14 awards and have been nominated for an impressive 54 awards. They won the American Music Award for the Favorite Electronic/Dance Music Artist in 2016 and 2017. Their songs “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer”, both got nominated for the Collaboration of the Year in 2017.
In 2017, they won the Billboard Music Award for the Top Dance/Electronic Artist and the Top Hot 100 Song for “Closer”. The duo got their biggest achievement in 2017, when they won the Best Dance Recording Award at the Grammys for “Don’t Let Me Down”. “Closer” was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
The Chainsmokers have won several iHeartRadio Music Awards in 2017, including the Dance Song of the Year for “Closer”, Best New Artist, Dance Album of the Year for Collage, Best New Pop Artist and Dance Artist of the Year.
