When you think of The Beach Boys, it’s hard not to imagine the ocean. Hailing from sunny Hawthorne, California, the quintet spent most of their early years perfecting their signature brand of surf rock, known for upbeat guitar riffs and multi-layered harmonies, which can be heard on songs like “I Get Around,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Help Me, Rhonda.” The Beach Boys then proved they were more than just a band that sang about girls and cars with the release of their 1966 album, Pet Sounds, which is widely considered one of the most important records in music history.
In a 1972 review of Pet Sounds, Rolling Stone wrote: “Aside from its importance as Brian Wilson's evolutionary compositional masterpiece, [the album] was the first rock record that can be considered a ‘concept album’; from first cut to last we were treated to an intense, linear personal vision of the vagaries of a love affair and the painful, introverted anxieties that are the wrenching precipitates of the unstable chemistry of any love relationship.”
Over the duration of their career, The Beach Boys have experimented with different musical style and performed with various lineups, but no matter what happens, the group will always be remembered as “America’s Band,” centering around core members Brian, Denis and Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine.
