If you’re a fan of the Texas A&M Aggies, you’re living the dream right now. With the reigning Heisman winner leading the offense, an electrifying in-game atmosphere and another campaign in the best football conference in America, it’s good to be the Aggies in 2013.
Founded in 1894, the Texas A&M Aggies played for most of their history in the Southwest Conference, winning 17 conference titles before moving to the Big 12 in 1996. In addition to a list of coaches that includes legends Dana X. Bible, Paul “Bear” Bryant (who coached at A&M before become an all-time great at Alabama and Gene Stallings, who, as a player, was one of Texas A&M’s “Junction Boys,” Texas A&M churns out NFL players year after year. Some of the former Aggies playing on Sundays in 2013: Von Miller, Martellus Bennett and 2013 #2 overall pick Luke Joeckel of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Of all the stars in college football, Johnny Manziel shines the brightest. The first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy (first awarded in 1935), Manziel exploded into the national spotlight in 2012 after replacing current Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill. Putting up mind-boggling statistics on the ground and through the air, it was Manziel’s performance in beating then #1 Alabama that made him famous.
The only team to beat the eventual National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide in 2012, the Aggies finished the season at 10-2 and eviscerated the Oklahoma Sooners in the Cotton Bowl Classic. For his part, Johnny Manziel rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns and threw for two additional TDs.
The 12th Man
While the Seattle Seahawks have attempted to coopt the 12th Man banner, everyone knows where this tradition started. In Aggieland, by tradition, the entire student section stands throughout the course of the game and screams their heads off in support of their beloved team.
