A Brief History

The Teen Choice Awards is a manifestation of an idea conceived by Michael Burg and Bob Bain. They wanted an award show that targeted the teens, a demographic just above the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Greg Sills was brought on board as the supervising producer and he has been doing the honors since the beginning.

The first edition of the Teen Choice Awards was held on August 1, 1999 at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hanger. The ceremony was held without a designated host, with Britney Spears opening the show. Other stars that performed were, Christina Aguilera, Gloria Estefan, NSYNC and Blink-182. The first Teen Choice Awards were successful and that paved the way for it be held every year since.

The Venues

In 1999 and 2000, the first two Teen Choice Awards editions were held at the Barker Hangar. The Awards then moved to the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City in 2001 and remained there till 2013. The event was then held at the Shrine Auditorium in 2014, at the Galen Center in 2015 and at the Forum in 2016. In 2017, it returned to the Galen Center once again.
