Before the country went a capella crazy, thanks in part to the overwhelming success of the TV show Glee and the movie Pitch Perfect, the group Straight No Chaser was wowing audiences by using their voices as the ultimate instrument.
Though originally formed at Indiana University in 1996, it wasn’t until 2008—when a 1998 video of the 10-piece performing a harmonic rendition of “The 12 Days Of Christmas”—that the group scored widespread attention and a five-album record deal with Atlantic Records. We thought it was a joke,” vocalist Michael Itkoff told The New York Times in 2008. “But Atlantic flew us to New York and put us up at the Dream hotel. There was a fruit plate in my hotel room. They were talking about a tour with Josh Groban or Michael Bublé. I thought, Are you kidding me.”
Named for the title track off Thelonius Monk’s 1967 album of the same name, Straight No Chaser tends to keep the drinking theme consistent in many of their releases—like 2010’s With A Twist and 2013’s Under The Influence—though the band are attracted to more love-oriented songs, like Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” and Coldplay’s “Fix You.” Catch the group on this summer’s Happy Hour Tour to check out their recent rendition of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” complete with the beatmaker’s famous 15-gallon hat.
