Steve Harvey is a well-known American comedian, actor, radio and TV personality and author. He first rose to fame for his observational humor in stand-up shows and later went on to host radio and TV shows. Harvey has also authored a number of books about relationships and self-help advices. Early Years

Broderick Steven Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia, in January of 1957. He is the youngest among five siblings.

Harvey was quite young when his family relocated to Cleveland. He did his graduation from Glenville High School in the year 1974 and returned to his home state to study further at the West Virginia University. After his studies, Harvey did various jobs including working as a postman and insurance salesman. He even tried his hand at professional boxing. But neither of this gave him the satisfaction and enjoyment as being on stage. Harvey discovered this interest of his when he performed stand-up for the first time in 1985. The Beginning

Over the following years, Steve Harvey performed gigs at numerous small clubs and earned quite a strong and devoted fan base. But during this time, he struggled to make ends meet. He was sleeping in his 1976 Ford whenever he couldn’t afford a hotel room. He took showers in swimming pools or at gas stations.

Towards the end of the 80s’, Steve Harvey emerged as a finalist in the National Comedy Search in the second annual Johnnie Walker event. This was the point from where his career took off. In 1993, Harvey took over as the host of It’s Showtime at the Apollo – a stint that went on until the year 2000. It established a great chemistry between Harvey and another comedian Cedric the Entertainer who played the role of Harvey’s best friend on the show. Their on screen chemistry was a joy to watch.

Cedric the Entertainer later joined Harvey on a nationwide stand-up tour, The Kings of Comedy. It also featured comedians D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac. In the year 1999, The Kings of Comedy set the record for the top grossing comedy tour in the history of the United States. It made over $19 million. With this Harvey and his three partners became celebrities on a national level. This status was further reinforced with the release of The Original Kings of Comedy, a documentary that captured some moments of the two-night show in North Carolina.  The film was a massive box-office hit, earning over $38 million.

In the year 2000, Steve Harvey began hosting the daily radio talk show, The Steve Harvey Morning Show. Initially aired in Dallas and Los Angeles, the show later gained a New York City flagship and national syndication. It currently airs on numerous stations around the country.

Even after he had established himself as a radio personality, Steve Harvey continued his stand-up and acting endeavors. He went on to host a reality show contest titled Steve Harvey’s Big Time which aired from 2003 to 2005. He made his acting debut on the big careen with a small role in the musical-comedy drama film The Fighting Temptations that came out in 2003. He appeared as a supporting cast in movies including You Got Served, Racing Stripes and Johnson Family Vacation. In the latter, Harvey served as a voice actor.

On his radio show, Steve Harvey gave some hilariously blunt advice to woman regarding their relationships. The response led him to write books on similar topics and in 2009, he unexpectedly emerged as a bestselling author on relationship advice. While he received negative reviews by some for these books, fans absolutely loved his straight-forward and light-hearted approach to self-help. His book titled Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man and Straight Talk, No Chaser both made it to the bestseller lists.

In 2010, Harvey was seen as the host of the reality game show Family Feud. In this show, the comedian not only got to show his amazing wit but also had the opportunity to interact with ordinary people.

In 2015, Harvey attracted a lot of controversy when he announced the wrong contestant as the winner of the Miss Universe pageant. Nevertheless, he acknowledged his mistake and took full responsibility for it.
