About the Show

Plot-Set in 19th century Germany, the rock musical follows a group of teenagers on their journey to sexual and intellectual awakening.

The relationship between the characters of Melchior and Wendla is central to the plot. The two are attracted to each other both physically and intellectually. What draws them towards each other is a mutual need to question the norms of the society and challenge the same with reasoning and logic. Both find their conversations intellectually stimulating and hence there is a feeling of mutual understanding which they are unable to find elsewhere.

The innocent flirting between the two leads them into an intimate situation where they are overpowered by their emotions. When Melchior makes advances towards Wendla, she hesitates to reciprocate owing to the values and morals instilled in her.

Among other characters in the plot is Melchior’s best friend Moritz who struggles in school and is under immense pressure from his parents to succeed. Martha who is a friend of Wendla, has a crush on Moritz and is often teased by other girls for it. She suffers at the hands of her abusive father.

With only each other for guidance and support, the inquisitive, confused and rebellious bunch of teenagers discover their minds, bodies and themselves along the way.

Music- Spring Awakening is divided into two acts. Act I comprise of eleven songs while Act II consists of eight. The play opens with the number ‘Mama who bore me’ featuring Wendla.
