Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., in Long Beach, California, the artist was given the nickname “Snoopy” by his parents, because of his appearance. Snoop developed an interest in music at an early age and began singing and playing the piano in the local church. Around sixth grade, he started to rap. He, along with his cousins and a friend, Warren G, recorded a few tapes, which eventually landed in the hands of the influential producer, Dr. Dre, who was impressed by his work and called him in for an audition.
Starting out in the music industry, Snoop adopted the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg. He started working with Dr. Dre and prepared for the release of his debut album.
Snoop Dogg’s debut album, Doggystyle, was released in 1993 and was produced by Dr. Dre, under Death Row Records. The album debuted at number one on both the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the Billboard 200 chart, selling nearly a million copies within the first week of sales. In 1994, the album was certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA. Hit singles such as “What’s My Name?” and “Gin & Juice” became the top ten most-played songs in the US and the album itself remained on the charts for several months after its release.
Before the release of his second studio album, Tha Doggfather, Snoop Dogg collaborated with fellow rapper, Tupac Shakur in 1996. The collaboration single, turned out to be one of the last songs recorded by Tupac Shakur, before being shot on 7th September, 1996, in Las Vegas.
The changing face of the hip hop industry with deaths and convictions becoming common had a profound effect on Snoop Dogg. By the time of the release of Tha Doggfather, in November, 1996, the gangsta lifestyle had become very evident.
The album itself was a slight variation in style for Snoop Dogg. Even though Tha Doggfather performed quite well, it wasn’t as successful as its predecessor.
New Labels and More Success
After parting ways with Death Row Records, Snoop Dogg signed on to No Limit Records in 1998 and began working on new music. With this label, the rapper released Da Game Is to be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999) and Tha Last Meal in 2000. No Limit Top Dogg sold more than a million copies, while Tha Last Meal was even more successful with more than 2 million in sales.
In 2002, Snoop Dogg released another album, called Paid tha Cost to be da Bo$$, which sold more than a million copies as well, and had several hit tracks such as “Beautiful” and “From tha Chuuuch to da Palace.”
In 2004, Snoop Dogg worked on R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece. The single “Drop It Like It's Hot” from this album, that featured Pharrell became Snoop Dogg’s first single to reach the top spot. The album sold nearly 2 million copies in the US alone and got heavy airplay on radio and television.
Since the release of his 2004 album, Snoop Dogg has released several works, with the latest ones being Bush in 2015, Coolaid in 2016 and most recently, Neva Left in May 2017.
The musical style of Snoop Dogg has seen a great degree of variation over the years. His “ultra-smooth, laidback delivery” of music has made him quite an icon in the rap music world. Kool Moe Dee talks about the kind of vocabulary used by the rapper, saying that Snoop Dogg “keeps it real simple...he simplifies it and he's effective in his simplicity”. The rapper was also praised by Rolling Stone’s music critic Toure, who said that Snoop had a slightly soft vocal delivery, in comparison to other rappers of his time, adding that "Snoop's vocal style is part of what distinguishes him: where many rappers scream, figuratively and literally, he speaks softly."

Over the course of his career, Snoop Dogg has won 27 awards and has been nominated a total of 96 times, including 18 nominations for Grammy Awards.
