Based on real-life conjoined twins, Daisy and Violet Hilton, Side Show is the story of sisters looking for fame, love, success, and individuality while still embracing what makes them unique: each other. Set in the 1920’s and 30’s, Side Show lacks nothing in the showmanship department – the worlds of vaudeville, Hollywood and traveling circus life create a world fit for the Broadway stage. With a push/pull element between the sister’s personal desires and their collective career dreams, Side Show reminds audiences that you don’t always see what is right in front of you.
Originally staged in 1997, Side Show had a very short run with positive reviews, 4 Tony nominations, but no wins. The Hilton sisters were played by Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley, and were co-nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, something the Tonys had never before done. In 2013, Side Show was revived at the La Jolla playhouse, with Bill Condor as director and Erin Davie and Emily Padgett as the Hilton sisters. It then moved to the Kennedy Center in June 2014 for a one-month run, and is slated to open at the St. James Theater in previews at the end of October, officially beginning their run just before Thanksgiving.
