Early Life & Influences
Shawn Mendes was born in Toronto, Ontario, on August 8, 1998. His mother is English while his father is of Portuguese descent.
Shawn rose to fame when he began posting cover videos on the social media app Vine back in 2013. In a few months, his videos got views in millions and by 2014 he was the third most followed music artist on Vine.
Artist manager Andrew Gertler discovered the singer online and led him to sign a contract with the Island Records. Shawn’s debut single ‘Life of the Party’ was an instant hit, making him the youngest music artist to debut in the Top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Within the same year, Mendes performed as opening act of Austin Mahone’s nationwide tour and released his debut major label EP. It reached the fifth spot on the Billboard 200 and sold around 48,000 copies in its first week of release.

Although Mendes had earned anenormous fan following owing to his frequent touring and online posts, it was with his debut studio album ‘Handwritten’ that he carved his niche in the industry.
The record came out in April of 2015 and topped the Billboard 200, selling over 100,000 copies within the first week of release. This made him the youngest music artist to debut at the top spot since Justin Bieber’s ‘My World 2.0.’
The album’s third single ‘Stitches’ reached the fourth spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and hence became Shawn’s first Top 10 song in the US. It also reached the number one position on charts in the UK.

Like his previous studio effort, this record too debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard 200. It sold around 145,000 copies in its first week of release. This is even greater than his debut mega hit album ‘Handwritten.’

Shawn Mendes has the honor of being among the five music artists to have debuted at the number one spot before turning eighteen. At a very young age, the pop idol has bagged numerous awards and accolades.
The Teen Choice Award for ‘Webstar in Music’ (2014) was Shawn’s first award. Besides, he has two MTV Europe Music Awards and four iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards to his name. Shawn has also received the prestigious Allan Slaight Honor from Canada’s Walk of Fame. He was included in the ‘30 Under 30’ list by Forbes in 2016. He also won a People’s Choice Award in the category of ‘Favorite Breakout Artist’ in the same year.
In 2017, his song ‘Treat You Better’ was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award in the category of ‘Best Pop Video.’
