The Seattle Seahawks were established as an expansion team in 1976. Being the only professional football team based in the Pacific Northwest region of the US, the Seahawks enjoy one of the biggest fan bases in the NFL. Football fans from Montana, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho and even Canada root for the Seahawks.

Being one of the youngest teams in the NFL, there is much that the Seahawks have achieved in a short period of time. They have won 10 division titles and 3 conference championships. They have also appeared in 3 Super Bowls, winning the Super Bowl in 2014.

Standout Moments in Seattle Seahawks History –

Since 1976, the Seahawks, like all teams, has had its share of ups and downs. Some of these moments are listed below.

Super Bowl XLVIII – It was February 2, 2014, and two of the best NFL teams had gathered at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to win the most coveted prize in the NFL – the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The NFC Champions, the Seattle Seahawks were facing the AFC Champions, the Denver Broncos. With over 115 million television viewers, Super Bowl XLVIII became the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of all time.

The Seahawks entered the game as the underdogs. In a dramatic set of events, the Seahawks trounced the Broncos 43-8. This was Seahawks first Super Bowl win and the Broncos’ fifth Super Bowl loss. The Seahawks won by the largest margin of victory for any underdog.

The First Win –On October 17, 1976, the Seahawks won their first regular season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at their home ground. The final score was 13-10, thanks to QB Jim Zorn’s unstoppable offensive line.

“Knoxing” Your Way Through – Like all expansion teams, the Seattle Seahawks suffered repeated defeats in their early seasons, but that changed with the arrival of head coach Chuck Knox. He was hired in 1983, the same year when the Seahawks would make their first playoffs. The young Seahawks would then go all the way to the AFC Championship game, knocking out the formidable offense lines of John Elway’s Broncos and Dan Marino’s Dolphins on their way. In the AFC Championship game, however the Seahawks lost to the Oakland Raiders. The City of Seattle, nevertheless, enjoyed the ride.

The Seattle Seahawks Archrivals –

Over the years, the Seahawks have had their share of rivals, producing some of the most exciting games in the NFL.

Arizona Cardinals – With the arrival of Bruce Arians as Arizona’s head coach, this intra-divisional rivalry has heated up. Their win-loss record is almost tied, which makes their upcoming games even more difficult to predict. The biggest reason behind this rivalry is that both of these NFC West teams are among Super Bowl favorites in the NFC.

San Francisco 49ers –The Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers have had a great rivalry. However, truly great rivalries manifest when both teams are strong. The 49ers are no longer the outfit they used to be and therefore this rivalry has died down.

Denver Broncos –The Seahawks – Broncos rivalry existed even before the Seahawks Super Bowl win in 2014. From the 1980s to 2002, the Broncos were a major rival for the Seahawks. Under John Elway, the Broncos had an unstoppable offense and hence won most of the games against the Seahawks. However, since 2002, the Seahawks have won two of the four inter conference face offs.

The Seahawks Greatest Players –

Since 1976, some of the greatest football players have been Seahawks:

Walter Jones –Jones, an offensive tackle, played his entire professional career with the Seahawks. He is considered to be one of the greatest left tackles in the league’s history.

Steve Largent – This wide receiver also played his entire professional career with the Seahawks. He is called the Seahawks’ first great player. When he retired, he held five NFL records, including the one for most career receptions.

Cortez Kennedy – Defensive tackle, Kennedy played his entire professional career with the Seahawks. He was the best defensive lineman in Seahawks’ history. He was a Pro-Bowler six years consecutively from 1991 to 1996.
