Originally known as the Utah Starzz (whose unique name was a combination of the now-defunct ABA’s Utah Stars and the NBA’s Utah Jazz, the San Antonio Silver Stars was one of the eight original teams participating in the Women’s National Basketball Association’s inaugural season in 1997. The team stayed in Salt Lake City until after the 2002 season, at which time the Utah Jazz ownership sold the franchise to the owner of the San Antonia Spurs.
Perseverance Pays Off
While still in Salt Lake City, the team had the unfortunate distinction of having the worst record in the league at the end of the first season. But with every setback comes an opportunity, and with the first draft pick of the 1998 draft, they acquired Margo Dydek: a Polish phenom who, at 7’2”, was easily the tallest female basketball player in the world. And although Dydek did not have the impact on the team that many had hoped for, they did earn their first playoff spot in 2001.
The next four seasons in San Antonio didn’t look much better for the Silver Stars, but after making some impressive trades prior to the 2007 season, the team found themselves in contention for the championship. San Antonio got their first taste of success in the 2007 season when they advanced all the way to the Western Conference Finals before falling to the Phoenix Mercury.

In 2008, the Silver Stars held on to that small dose of success and charged all the way back to the Conference Finals—and this time they were victorious, defeating the Los Angeles Sparks in a hard-fought 3 games. Unfortunately, their success came to an end in the WNBA Finals when they fell to the Detroit Shock.
