Early Life

Sam Hunt was born as the eldest of three siblings and studied at the Cedartown High School. This is where he played football and developed a serious interest in the sport. After high school, he was a quarterback for two years at the Middle Tennessee State University. After football practice every day, the star player started teaching himself how to play the acoustic guitar.

In 2007, Sam Hunt was noticed by the NFL and was invited to train with the Kansas City Chiefs. But after failing to impress them, he left for Nashville to pursue a full-time career in music, much to the surprise of his family. This is where he got involved in songwriting for famous artists and then eventually making his own music.

In 2012, Hunt co-wrote the Kenny Chesney song, “Come Over” for which he won an ASCAP award. The songwriter turned singer then made his commercial recording debut with the independently released single “Raised On It” in 2013, followed by a 15-song demo mixtape called Between the Pines. It early 2014, Hunt signed on to MCA Nashville and released a single “Leave the Night On”. This single ended up becoming a country songs chart topper, setting the stage perfectly for the upcoming release of Sam Hunt’s debut album, Montevallo. The video for “Leave the Night On” earned Hunt two nominations at the CMT Music Awards, winning the Breakthrough Video of the Year award.

The album, Montevallo, released on October 27, 2014, debuted at number one on the country charts and number three on the pop charts and generated three hits – “House Party,” “Take Your Time” and “Break Up in a Small Town”. The single “Make You Miss Me, hit number one on the Country Airplay charts in 2016. This made Hunt the first solo male artist to land four number one hits on the Country Airplay chart from a debut studio album.

Within days of the release of Montevallo, Hunt announced his first tour, Lipstick Graffiti. In 2015, the country star also served as an opening act for Lady Antebellum’s Wheels up Tour.

Influences on Sam Hunt’s Music

Hunt’s music has an influence of a multitude of genres, with a strong foundation of country elements. Dwight Yoakam says that Hunt’s music reminds him of Ray Charles’ album, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.

Hunt’s song writing is heavily influenced by Brad Paisley. Other musical influences that the country star has cited over the years include Usher, K-Ci & JoJo, Ginuwine, Alice Cooper and R. Kelly.

Hunt talks about his musical style saying that he does not write with a specific genre in mind, rather, he follows his instinct. While talking to Rolling Stone Country, Hunt talked about country music, saying,

 "I think country songs are truthful songs about life written by country people, but the beats and sounds will continue to evolve."
