Like many comedians, Russell Peters’ biggest influence was legendary stand-up comic George Carlin. When the two met in 1992, Carlin told the Canadian comedian to get on stage as much as humanly possible. Peters really took Carlin’s advice to heart because he’s made the road his second home, performing everywhere from the Philippines to China, Denmark to Malaysia. He’s also participated in USO tours of Afghanistan, in addition to selling out two nights at O2 Arena in London, England.
Much of Russell Peters’ comedy—featured on albums like Outsourced and Red, White And Brown—tackles issues related to racial and ethnic stereotypes, which are subjects he’s struggled with ever since childhood when he was bullied for looking different than the other kids. “I think I’m very fortunate to be one of the few comics who can draw such a broad demographic,” Peters said to fellow comic Jim Norton in an interview on SiriusXM Radio. “You go and see some comics and there’s only going to be white people. You see certain comics there’s only going to be black people. You see certain comics and there will be black and/or white. But mine is black, white, Asian, Indian, and Other. I’m fortunate enough to have that sort of cross-section.” Peters’ latest comedy special, Russell Peters: Notorious, is currently available on Netflix.
