The Aventura Years
Romeo Santos’ father was Dominican while his mother was from Puerto Rico. At the age of thirteen, he joined a church choir and that is when he discovered his exceptional vocal abilities. He then went on to form a group Los Teenagers which got very popular among the youngsters from the Dominican-American background.
In the year 1999, Los Teenagers signed a recording deal with Platinum Latin and they changed their name to Grupo Aventura. To bring Bachata to mainstream audiences, the band decided to fuse R&B, hip hop and pop music with bachata. The group came out with its debut album titled “Generation Next” and it did quite well among their fans in New York.
They were just getting started.
Aventura then went on to release their next album “We Broke the Rules” in July of 2002. It also contained the track Obsesion that turned out to be a big hit. It went on to top the charts in multiple countries worldwide.
Aventura released three more albums after that. One of them was certified platinum while the other two went quadruple platinum (Latin) in the United States. The band also released two Live Albums in total with one of them being certified six times platinum (Latin) and the other one getting an eight time platinum (Latin) certification. Romeo Santos then decided to try his luck as a solo artist in 2011.
Romeo Santos Goes Solo
The time he spent with Aventura gave him the platform to kickstart his career as a solo performer. He began his solo journey by releasing the track You which also featured on his debut album “Formula, Vol. 1.” The song became a massive hit that went on to the top of the Tropical Songs and the Hot Latin Songs charts. The next track was a collaborative effort with Usher and was titled Promise. The song went to the number one spot on the Tropical Songs and the Hot Latin Songs charts too.
Formula, Vol. 1 hit the music stores on November 8, 2011 and it went on to peak at the first spot on both the Top Latin Albums and the Tropical Albums chart. It also peaked at the ninth position on the US Billboard 200. The record was certified triple platinum (Latin) in the US and went gold in Mexico and Venezuela. Formula, Vol. 1 also brought Romeo Santos a Grammy nomination and won him three Billboard Latin Music Awards in the process.
