Early Years

Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. Among the three siblings, she is the eldest. The singer had a difficult childhood as her parents did not get along and eventually divorced when she was fourteen. Her father struggled with his cocaine addiction and she herself suffered extreme headaches as a child, a condition she hid from her friends due to fear of being called abnormal.

Rihanna studied at the Broome Memorial Primary School and then at the Combermere High School. She was inclined towards music since an early age and started singing at the age of seven. In order to divert her attention from the problems at home, she immersed herself into music which also served as a catharsis for her.

Debut

At the age of fifteen, Rihanna formed a music group with two classmates. The trio had the opportunity to perform before music producer Even Rodgers. To the disappointment of her two friends, Rodgers completely ignored them but was immensely impressed by the talented and beautiful Rihanna, as he puts in his own words, “The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist.”

He invited Rihanna to New York City to record some demo tapes that could be sent to record labels. Subsequently Rihanna left Barbados, moved in with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut and began working on her demo tape. In an interview, the singer stated “When I left Barbados, I didn't look back.” And she didn’t.

She was soon signed up by the Def Jam Recordings. Her first single, Pon de Replay was released in August of 2005. A reggae influenced club hit, the single announced Rihanna’s arrival in the music industry in spectacular fashion. Her debut record Music of the Sun came out later that month and debuted among the top 10 on the Billboard 200, selling over two million copies around the world.
