Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. Among the three siblings, she is the eldest. The singer had a difficult childhood as her parents did not get along and eventually divorced when she was fourteen. Her father struggled with his cocaine addiction and she herself suffered extreme headaches as a child, a condition she hid from her friends due to fear of being called abnormal.
Rihanna studied at the Broome Memorial Primary School and then at the Combermere High School. She was inclined towards music since an early age and started singing at the age of seven. In order to divert her attention from the problems at home, she immersed herself into music which also served as a catharsis for her.
At the age of fifteen, Rihanna formed a music group with two classmates. The trio had the opportunity to perform before music producer Even Rodgers. To the disappointment of her two friends, Rodgers completely ignored them but was immensely impressed by the talented and beautiful Rihanna, as he puts in his own words, “The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist.”
He invited Rihanna to New York City to record some demo tapes that could be sent to record labels. Subsequently Rihanna left Barbados, moved in with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut and began working on her demo tape. In an interview, the singer stated “When I left Barbados, I didn't look back.” And she didn’t.
She was soon signed up by the Def Jam Recordings. Her first single, Pon de Replay was released in August of 2005. A reggae influenced club hit, the single announced Rihanna’s arrival in the music industry in spectacular fashion. Her debut record Music of the Sun came out later that month and debuted among the top 10 on the Billboard 200, selling over two million copies around the world.
Rihanna’s second studio album A Girl Like Me came out in April of 2006. The record topped the music charts in thirteen countries and established the singer as a teen sensation. Its single SOS was Rihanna’s first one to reach the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Besides, the record spawned top 10 hits such as Unfaithful and Break It off.
Rihanna’s third music album Good Girl Gone Bad saw her transform from a pop teen idol to a sex symbol. The record’s lead single Umbrella won the singer her first Grammy. The song also featured Jay-Z and talking about Rihanna’s growth as an artist in the album, the rapper said “If you listen to the lyrics to that song, you know the depth and how far she's come.”
Among other hit tracks on Good Girl Gone Bad are Don’t Stop the Music and Shut Up and Drive.
2010 was a very eventful year for the young singer. Her record Loud was a smash hit, following which Rihanna hit the road with the Loud Tour. The album gave hits such as S&M, Only Girl (In the World) and What’s My Name.
Rihanna’s following studio effort Talk That Talk was a dance-oriented record with elements of electronic, hip hop, dubstep and house music. Comprising hit singles such as You da One, We Found Love and the title track, the album debuted at the third spot on the US Billboard 200.
In 2012, Rihanna treated her fans with the pop and R&B music record Unapologetic. It featured a total of seven singles, including the smash hits, Stay and Diamonds. This was the singer’s first record to reach the top spot on the pop charts and won her a prestigious Grammy as well.
Having established herself as a top music star, Rihanna tried her luck in acting as well. She co- starred in the sci-fi movie Battleship in 2012 and lent her vocals to the lead character of the animated movie Home in 2015.

Released in January, 2016, the album has received positive reviews by the critics and ranked among the top albums of the year by numerous renowned publications.
