Early Days

Rascal Flatts is a trio comprising of three family members, Joe Don Rooney, Jay DeMarcus and Gary LeVox. LeVox and DeMarcus are cousins who grew up in Columbus, Ohio. DeMarcus shifted to Nashville to become a musician. He soon joined a Christian Music band “East to West.” Five years later, he asked LeVox to come to Nashville too. LeVox at the time was also a member of a Christian group but the pull of joining his cousin was too strong for him to resist.

The two started to record and perform together and soon met Joe Don Rooney. One night, they were performing at Printer’s Alley when their guitarist failed to turn up. They asked Rooney to perform with them and that is when the group was incepted.

Mila Mason then stepped in to recommend Rascal Flatts to producers Marty Williams and Mark Bright. They then sent a three tape demo of their music to Doug Howard who was an A&R at the Lyric Street Records. Howard was extremely impressed and the band was asked to come to the label’s office the next day where they played a few tracks. Rascal Flatts were soon signed by the label.

The Breakthrough

It was in the first half of the 2000s that Rascal Flatts debuted by releasing the track Prayin’ for Daylight. The track peaked at the third spot on the country charts and also became their debut record’s title track. Rascal Flatts then released their first self-titled album on June 6, 2002. The record was an instant hit both critically and commercially. It received four stars out of five from AllMusic and went to the third spot on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums. Apart from Prayin’ for Daylight, three other singles from the album also cracked the top ten. The tracks were This Everyday Love, While You Love Me, and I’m Movin’ On. “Rascal Flatts” sold over two million copies to earn double platinum certification from the RIAA.
