Radio City Music Hall – Early Years
Following the crash of stock market in 1929, Radio City Music Hall brought immense hope and optimism to the New York City. At the peak of the Great Depression, the venue created a lasting impact on the cultural and architectural landscape of the city.
Even the failing economy didn’t stop John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who made a bold decision to construct an entire building complex that would attract commercial tenants. Along with the Radio Corporation of America, an electronic media company and Samuel Roxy Rothafel, the brilliant theatrical impresario, Rockefeller realized a dream – To build an innovative theater, unlike any other in the world.
Rockefeller sent his design team on a European cruise for inspiration, to look at historic theaters and performance venues. But instead, it was the view from the ship – the lengthy blue waters and breathtaking sunsets that stirred their senses. So, when the architects Edward Durell Stone and Donald Deskey drew a plan, they made sure to add a golden-arched, sunset inspired ceiling to the theater.
In design, Deskey chose grandeur over glamour and elegance over gaudy indulgence. By creating many separate spaces, the venue was able to offer top-class entertainment at reasonable prices, as Radio City Music Hall tickets were available at different affordable rates. It was a place that not just entertained but also inspired.
Art has been made an integral part of Radio City Music Hall’s interior. Artists were invited to draw murals on the walls and create wall coverings. Sculptors were also roped in to show their craftsmanship with ceramics and molds, and some of the best textile designers were given the opportunity to develop patterns for curtains and carpets.
Through Donald Deskey’s eclectic fusion of contemporary and precious materials, the venue has been able to retain its character in all these years. Over a 300 million people have been to Radio City Music Hall, enjoying its larger than life events. Concerts, movies, theatricals and stage shows, all form a highly entertaining events schedule at the venue.
