Pusha T was born as Terrence LeVarr Thornton on May 13, 1977 in the Bronx, NY. He and his family moved to Virginia Beach, VA. It was in Virginia that Pusha and his brother Gene ‘No Malice’ Thornton grew up and together formed the rap duo Clipse. Pharrell Williams, who was from Virginia, helped the dup get signed to Elektra Records in 1997. In 2004, Clipse launched a record label called Re-Up Records. The duo formed a new rap group called Re-Up Gang along with Ab-Liva and Sandman. Re-Up Gang released an album called Hell Hath No Fury in 2006. In 2009, Pusha and his brother announced they would be venturing out on their own to work on their solo careers.
Signing with GOOD Music
Pusha signed with GOOD Music in September 2010. GOOD Music, which stands for Getting Out Our Dreams, is an American record label founded by Kanye West. He was immediately featured on Kanye West’s album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy which was a number 1 album on the Billboard 200. Pusha can be heard on the tracks “So Appalled” and “Runaway” on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. In the beginning of 2011, Pusha released his first solo work; a mixtape called Fear of God which was released independently. The mixtape featured artists such as Kanye West, 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Pharrell Williams, and Kevin Cossom. Later that year Pusha released a follow up to the mixtape, an EP titled Fear of God II: Les Us Pray. This EP was the first major record label debut for Pusha with GOOD Music. In addition to the artists featured on Fear of God, Fear of God II: Les Us Pray also features Diddy, Young Jeezy, Tyler the Creator, Juicy J, Meek Mill, and French Montana. The EP debuted at number 66 on the Billboard 200. This was just the beginning of successful projects Pusha T would release with GOOD Music.
My Name is My Name
It 2012, the lead single for the GOOD Music compilation album Cruel Summer was released. The song was called “Mercy” and featured Pusha T, Kanye West, Big Sean and 2 Chainz. The single was a massive hit, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. In October 2012, Pusha dropped the lead first single for his up and coming debut album. The single was called “Pain” and featured Future. Pusha’s release date for his first studio album was pushed until October 2013. The album was titled My Name is My Name and it debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200. The hit album featured artists such as Chris Brown, Rick Ross, The-Dream, Jeezy, Kelly Rowland, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Pharrell, and Kendrick Lamar.
King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude and Daytona
In November 2015, it was announced that Kanye West had appointed Pusha T to be the president of GOOD Music. Shortly after, Pusha released the first single for his next album. The single was called “Untouchable”, produced by Timbaland. The album was titled King Push – Darkest Before Dawn and dropped on December 18, 2015. It had 17 million streams within its first week of release and peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200. Then next Pusha T album was released in 2018. This album was called Daytona and was produced by Kanye West. The seven song compilation featured Rick Ross and Meek Mill. Daytona was Pusha’s most successful album to date, debuting at number 3 on the Billboard 200. Now Pusha T will be going on a brief tour in promotion of Daytona.
