In the world of tropical music, there isn’t a bigger star than Prince Royce, who’s spent the last five years reinventing modern bachata. For those who aren’t bachata aficionados, the musical style hails from the Dominican Republic and is similar to that of bolero, known for fast—and repetitive—guitar chords. It’s all about the syncopation and no one gets your hips moving faster these days than Prince Royce, thanks to songs like “El Amor Que Perdimos” and “Corazón Sin Cara,” both off the singer’s 2010 self-titled debut.
On his follow-up album, 2012’s Phase II, Royce started to introduce more musical styles into his repertoire, as illustrated by the fact his single, “Los Cosas Pequeñas,” hit #1 on Billboard’s Tropical, Latin and Latin Pop charts. Though an English album is in the works, Royce is taking his time with the transition. “We knew it was a Latin album with a follow-up English album, so we had to prep everything around that,” Royce said of his latest release, 2013’s Soy el Mismo, in an interview with Billboard Magazine. “I want to cater to both worlds. I don't want to be an English artist that blows up and forgets the Latin community. Even if I'm doing well in English, I want to give it that Latin flavor and represent where I'm from and where I started.” Prince Royce’s first English-speaking pop album is slated for release some time this year.
