Of all the franchises in the WNBA, the Phoenix Mercury has one of the most interesting histories. As one of the most unpredictable teams in the league—and one of only eight that has been around since the beginning—they’ve seen it all.
A Must-Watch Team
The Mercury once went six straight seasons without making the playoffs (from 2001 to 2006, just two years after concluding the WNBA’s second season with a loss in the championship game), but in 2007 they not only made it to the postseason, but they also won their first title. The following season the Mercury only won 16 games, finishing in seventh place in their conference and missing the playoffs for the eighth time in 10 seasons.
Guess what they followed that up with? If you guessed a second championship in three years, you’d be correct.
In 2010 and 2011, the Mercury made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals before falling to the Seattle Storm and Minnesota Lynx, respectively. Last season the Mercury had a tough go again, failing to make the playoffs with a franchise-low seven wins.
Anything can happen this season as the team gears up to make a run at another championship. Back on the roster are former University of Connecticut superstar Diana Taurasi (the league’s leading scorer for three straight seasons, starting in 2009), DeWanna Bonner (who was named the Sixth Woman of the Year in 2011), and Penny Taylor (All-WNBA Second Team member in 2011).
Watch one of the most exciting teams in the WNBA take the floor in an attempt to win their third championship.
