A Brief History
Originally the Syracuse Nationals, a 1963 move to Philadelphia replaced the void left by the Warriors, who moved to San Francisco. Renamed the 76ers as a reference to the rich American history based in Philadelphia, the 76ers started strong with superstars Wilt Chamberlain, Luscious Jackson, and Chet Walker. Only 6 years after forming, the Sixers were voted the Best Team in League History during the 1966-67 season. The 80s brought more superstars like Moses Malone and Julius Erving to the 76ers roster, bringing with them championship titles all over the 60s, 70s and early 80s.
Unfortunately, the mighty seem to always fall sooner or later. The 1984 season signaled the 76er lowpoint - until Charles Barkley arrived and brought eight seasons of crowd-pleasing antics. After Barkley left for the Phoenix Suns, it wasn't until the arrival of Allen Iverson almost 10 years later that the 76ers had a competitive edge once again. The post-Iverson-rebuild-era brought a parade of great players - Andre Iguodala, Elton Brand, Jrue Holiday, to name a few, and kept this franchise alive and well.
A Team Rebuilds
New ownership in 2011 also brought the luck and focus that the 76ers needed to become the 8th seed in the 2012 playoffs, beating the 1st seed Chicago Bulls but ultimatly losing to long-time rivals, the Celtics. Although this post-season run did not end in victory, big changes came in the form of new general manager Sam Hinkie and a major 2012-13 rebuild. Despite the franchise's best efforts, the "Katherine Coates Curse" struck the 76ers down in a very aggressive manner, struggling through a 26-game losing streak.
With record-breaking rookie Michael Carter-Williams leading this incredibly new team, the 76ers enter the 2014-15 season with almost entirely new faces: only 2 players on the current roster can claim more than 3 years of 76ers experience. While this might not be an immediate recipe for success, head coach Brett Brown has his eyes on the future - only time will tell what is in store for the 2014-15 season and beyond.
The City of Brotherly LovePhiladelphia is a great city, known for its passionate sports fans. Take a walk down South Stree, visit the waterfront, or do what Philadelphians do best: make some noise! Depending on the season, visitors and locals alike can choose to cheer for the Eagles, the Flyers, or the Phillies - all bring with them an amazing energy and a great time for the whole family.
