Philadanco History
Philadanco, or the Philadelphia Dance Company, was founded in 1970 by Joan Myers Brown. Its inception came as a response to the lack of opportunities for African American dancers in the United States. Under Brown's leadership, Philadanco aimed to provide a platform for Black dancers to showcase their talent while promoting cultural diversity in the performing arts. The company quickly gained acclaim for its innovative choreography that blended classical technique with contemporary styles, highlighting the richness of African American dance traditions. Throughout its history, Philadanco has been pivotal in breaking barriers, inviting audiences to witness the dynamic and expressive power of Black art. Over the decades, the company has toured extensively both nationally and internationally, collaborating with renowned artists and incorporating various genres from ballet to jazz, modern, and hip-hop. Philadanco has also been involved in major festivals and events, continuously striving to elevate the visibility of Black dancers and the art form itself.
