The Incarnate Word Cardinals Women's Basketball team has a rich history that dates back to its establishment. Founded in 1977, the team was created to provide competitive opportunities for female athletes at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, Texas. The program has grown significantly over the years, transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II in the late 1980s and then moving to NCAA Division I as part of the Southland Conference in 2013.
