Duke Blue Devils Women's Basketball History
The Duke Blue Devils women's basketball program began in 1975 and has since established itself as one of the premier teams in collegiate women's basketball. The program was initiated under the leadership of their first head coach, Marcia McDermott, and quickly began to gain recognition. In 1986, Duke hired legendary coach Gail Goestenkors, who took the team to new heights, including the program's first NCAA tournament appearance in 1986. Under Goestenkors, the Blue Devils consistently ranked among the top teams in the nation, making several Final Four appearances and earning numerous ACC titles. The team's rise to prominence continued with the hiring of current head coach Kara Lawson in 2020, who aims to build on the strong foundation laid by her predecessors. Throughout their history, the Blue Devils have produced numerous All-American players and have maintained a strong rivalry with other top programs, contributing to the rich tapestry of women's basketball in the NCAA.
