Pepe Aguilar was born in San Antonio, Texas, on August, 1968. His parents Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre were well-established recording artists and actors. Aguilar made his debut as a singer when he was only three years of age. This was during his father’s music concert at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Aguilar shared a special bond with his father who also served as a major inspiration in the way Aguilar carved his music career. While speaking of his father, the singer said “My father and I share respect for traditions, but not just musical ones. Also the traditions of the family, of history, of certain forms and ways of being that are essential to us. My father's career has been a great inspiration to me. Antonio Aguilar broke his face, played everything for everything to dignify Mexican music in countries that were not his.”
As a teenager, Pepe Aguilar enjoyed listening to rock music and performed as part of a band called Equs. After the disbanding of Equs, the Mexican-American singer decided to make music on his own. His blended the traditional Tejano music with modern pop influences and came up with a unique sound that set the foundation for a successful Latin music career.
Pepe Aguilar made his debut in the music industry with a tambora CD. It was titled Pepe Aguilar Con Tambora. Later he released more volumes of the same as well. His first mariachi record came out in 1992. Titled Recuérdame Bonito, the album was a massive hit in numerous countries, bringing Aguilar much recognition.
Pepe Aguilar’s next recording to hit the market was Que Bueno in 1993. It comprised a total of twelve mariachi songs, all of which became quite popular at the time.
In 1994, the singer released a Banda music record titled Chiquilla Bonita. Over the following few years, Pepe Aguilar did not release any new album until Por Mueres Como Tu in July of 1998. The record was a huge success, selling over two million albums in less than a year’s time.
The following year Pepe Aguilar released the record Por El Amor De Siempre. In this album, he took up the old songs from the 1970s era and gave them a modern treatment. The songs met a positive response from the fans and received heavy radio play.
In the new millennium Pepe Aguilar continued to produce hit albums and songs. Y Tenerte Olta Vez, No Soy de Nadie and Historias Sebastian released in 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively were all major hits. The singer’s MTV Unplugged album in 2014 reached high on the music charts and brought him to the attention of an entirely different audience.
The 49-year old most recent and 26th studio effort is the album No Lo Había Dicho. It was released via Equinoccio in June of 2016. Its single Maria debuted at the number one spot on the Mexican pop music charts.

As a music artist, Pepe Aguilar has respected his roots while at the same time been innovative and experimental in his compositions. To strike a balance between tradition and innovation is a rare quality which Aguilar has mastered to the core. In his own words, “There is a paradox in all this. On the one hand, I maintain respect for the essence of this music, the history that the genre has forged. On the other hand, I love breaking forms. But I do not worry about this contradiction, because at the end of the day, I do what my heart dictates. I have achieved a balance that leaves me calm. I can continue with the tradition at the same time that I modify it. I do not have to choose. It is these solid foundations and the support of my family that allow me to support myself.”
