When Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West got together for the first time, it wasn’t because they wanted to become a musical act. The two wanted to become songwriters. The two just wanted to write and build their own collection of songs that they could take to managers, labels and artists in order to show they what they can do.
But somethings in life are just meant to be!
And then they uploaded their track Body Gold in the year 2014 and everything changed. The song became a huge hit online and the two of them began to get messages from fans all across the globe. It was all so unexpected but it did feel great. It just carried on from there.
An Unusual First Release
They named their first studio album “Oh Wonder” but that was the only conventional thing about its release. They did not release the album all at once, instead they began to release one track from the album every month. The cycle began on September 1, 2014 and it kept on going for a year. The album in its entirety came out on September 4, 2015 and it contained two songs that had not been released till then.
Even though almost all of its tracks had already been released, the album still did great business. It received three out of five stars from both AllMusic and Renowned for Sound. It climbed to the twenty sixth spot in the UK and went to the nineteenth position in Canada. The album was certified gold in Canada and silver in the UK. It has also generated over half a billion streams online.
A Tour That Was Never In the Pipeline
Oh Wonder had decided to play only four shows after the release of their self-titled record. They thought those four shows will be enough and once that part was over, they would hit the studio once again. To say they had grossly underestimated the impact their music had made would be an understatement.
Those four shows were to be played in Los Angeles, New York, Paris and London and all four concerts sold-out a week after the album’s release. Oh Wonder eventually ended up playing an incredible one hundred and sixty two sets in a whopping one hundred and twelve cities worldwide.
Oh Wonder had arrived and they made their debuts at major festivals like Lollapalooza, Firefly and Bonnaroo in 2016. Then on March 30, 2017, they announced that they had completed their next album “Ultralife.”
The album came out on July 14, 2017 and made a very strong impression on the critics. It received four stars out of five from the Rolling Stone, Irish Times, Evening Standard and the Daily Telegraph. It also went as high as the eleventh spot on the US Top Alternative Albums chart and to the fourteenth position on the US Top Rock Albums chart. In the UK, Ultralife went to the eighth position while in Canada it went as high as the seventeenth spot.
