The Oakland Raiders was founded in 1960. After a bumpy start marred by poor on-field performance, spotty attendance and financial difficulties, it became one of the most successful teams of the 1970s and 1980s. They also won three Super Bowl Championships during the same era, in addition to winning multiple division and conference championships. The Oakland Raiders however slumped from 2003 to 2015, failing to make the playoffs. In 2016, however, the team ended their postseason drought.
The Raiders have their eyes set on big things this year. Led by a talented young core, Oakland is determined to win the AFC West and bring a Super Bowl title back to the Bay Area. Memorable Moments in Oakland Raiders History –
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is the most coveted prize in American football and the Raiders have lifted the trophy thrice.
Super Bowl XI – For the fifth consecutive time, the Raiders stood first in their division in the 1976 NFL season. Beating formidable opponents such as the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers in post-season games, the Raiders made it into the Super Bowl, their second such appearance. Super Bowl XI was played on January 9, 1977, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Raiders faced NFC champions, the Minnesota Vikings. This was the Vikings’ fourth Super Bowl appearance, however the more experienced Vikings lost to the Raiders 14-32.
Super Bowl XV – At the end of the 1980 regular season, the Raiders made the playoffs for the first time since 1977. They came second in their division and entered the playoffs as a wild card team. The Raiders nevertheless won their divisional and conference championships and advanced into Super Bowl XV. The game was played on January 25, 1981, at the Louisiana Superdome, where the Raiders faced the NFC champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. This was the Eagles first and the Raiders third Super Bowl appearance. The game was historic as the Raiders beat the Eagles 27-10, to become the first wild card playoff team to win a Super Bowl.
Super Bowl XVIII – This game was played on January 22, 1984, at the Tampa Stadium. The AFC champions, the Los Angeles Raiders (the team was based in Los Angeles back then) were facing off against the NFC champions, the Washington Redskins. The Raiders were the underdogs since the Redskins were the defending champions. They nevertheless beat the Redskins 38-9. Super Bowl XVIII remains the only championship game where an AFC team scored the highest points in a Super Bowl. This was also the first Super Bowl to be held in Tampa, Florida.
Oakland Raiders Rivalries –
The Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos are three of the biggest AFC West rivals of the Raiders. Their other rivalry is with the San Francisco 49ers, due to geographical proximity.
Denver Broncos – This rivalry’s biggest highlight is Raiders 14-game winning streak against the Broncos from 1965 to 1971. In 1977, the Broncos defeated the Raiders in the AFC Championship game to make it to the Super Bowl for the very first time. However, this rivalry is not as bitter as Raiders’ rivalry with the Chiefs.
Kansas City Chiefs – The Chiefs are the fiercest rivals of the Raiders. The Kansas City Chiefs are the only team in the AFC West that the Raiders have a losing record against. Needless to say, the Chiefs lead the overall series against the Raiders.
Los Angeles Chargers – The Chargers-Raiders rivalry started in 1963, when the Raiders defeated the Chargers twice in the fourth quarter. Raiders also held a winning streak against the Chargers 16-0-2 from 1968 to 1977. Currently, the Raiders have an upper hand in the overall series against the Chargers.
