Newsies The Musical is a Disney Theatrical Productions musical inspired by the New York City Newsboys Strike of 1899 and based on the 1992 Disney film Newsies. It premiered in 2011 and then opened on Broadway in March of 2012. It has been honored with eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and two wins in the Best Choreography and Best Original Score categories.
Set during the time when newspapers were distributed on street corners by newsboys, when shouts of “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” could be heard ‘round the city, Newsies tells the story of how New York City newsies, as they were known, protested the raise in the cost of a bundle of newspapers by refusing to distribute the overpriced New York World, which was owned by Joseph Pulitzer. The boys’ resolve is commendable, their dedication to fight for justice inspiring, and Newsies The Musical captures their passion in its non-stop action and raw excitement. Although history tells us how the story ends, the cast of Newsies manages to keep the audience engaged throughout.
An extremely high-energy musical, Newsies is “fortified by every step in a Broadway-by-the-numbers dance book. There are back flips, cartwheels, somersaults and kick lines galore, not to mention enough pirouettes to fill a whole season of ‘Swan Lake.’” If you have been looking for a musical that delivers a characteristic Broadway charm and enthusiasm and a real go-get-‘em attitude, Newsies certainly fits the bill. The New York Times proclaims that “‘Newsies’ has a stirring, old-school sincerity that’s hard to resist,” so don’t miss your chance to see this Tony Award-winning musical while it’s still on Broadway .
