Founded in 1972 as part of an effort to thwart a rival league, the New York Islanders have had one of the most perplexing histories in all of professional Sports. Winning four straight Stanley Cups from the 1979-80 season through 1982-83, the Islanders are one of the only recognized dynasties in the league’s history. Since the last Cup win, though, the Islanders haven’t reached the Conference Finals.
Young and Powerful
After missing the playoffs for six consecutive seasons, the Islanders battled back to contention in 2012-13. Populated by young stars (a majority of their roster was born in 1994!), the Islanders are in excellent hands moving forward. With exceptional young talent in the organization including breakout star John Tavares (the #1 overall pick in 2009), forward Kyle Okposo, and defenseman Griffin Reinhart, the Islanders are on the rise once again.
The Move to Brooklyn
After Nassau county voters said no to building a new stadium in 2011, an announcement came in 2012 that the New York Islanders were moving to the Barclay Center in Brooklyn for the 2015-16 season. This move will guarantee the Islanders have a home in Brooklyn until 2040, with Charles Wang remaining as the team’s owner.
