Early Life & Influences
Mumford & Sons cite Old Crow Medicine Show as their biggest influence. The leader of the band, Marcs Mumford stated,
“I first heard Old Crow’s music when I was, like, 16, 17, and that really got me into, like, folk music, bluegrass. I mean, I’d listened to a lot of Dylan, but I hadn’t really ventured into the country world so much. So Old Crow were the band that made me fall in love with country music.”
The group is also influenced by legends like Leonard Cohen, Billy Bragg, Spirit of the West and Bert Jansch.
Mumford & Sons was founded by Marcus Mumford in 2007 and consists of Ben Lovett, Ted Dwane and Winston Marshal. In 2008, the quartet recruited Adam Tudhope as the group’s manager who has represented stars like Laura Marling and Keane. The group then started to perform live and went on a U.K. wide tour in the same year with Sons of Noel and Adrian, Peggy Sue and Alessi’s Ark. They later played at the Glastonbury Festival for the first time and then toured Australia with Laura Marling.
Before the year could come to an end, the quartet churned out their extended play, ‘Love Your Ground’ on November 3, 2008. This EP came out via Chess Club and contained four tracks.
Breakthrough & Recognition
Mumford & Sons continued to find more fans by playing shows throughout the United Kingdom and the United States in 2009 and soon crossed paths with the three-time Grammy winning record producer, Markus Dravs. He helped produce the quartet’s first studio effort, ‘Sigh No More’, which was released on October 5, 2009. The album shot them straight to superstardom as it not only sold over five million copies in the United Kingdom, but also made a significant impact in the United States where it went triple platinum. It also won them a couple of Billboard Music Awards for ‘Top Rock Album’ and ‘Top Alternative Album’ and peaked at the second spot on the Billboard 200, Canadian Albums and UK Albums chart.
Although the twelve songs that featured on the album’s track-list were all highly addictive, but there were three, Little Lion Man, The Cave and Roll Away Your Stone that became extremely popular. The former was included in NME’s list of the ‘150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years’ and earned them a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Rock Song.’ It was also ranked at the top spot in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2009. The latter two were certified multi-platinum by the RIAA.
Mumford & Sons collaborated with Markus Dravs for the second time and churned out its sophomore studio record, ‘Babel’ on September 21, 2002. The record turned out to be more successful than ‘Sigh No More’ as it landed at the first spot in the United States and United Kingdom. Moreover, it won a Billboard Music Award and Grammy Award for ‘Top Rock Album’ and ‘Album of the Year’ respectively. It also made it to the Rolling Stone’s list of the ’50 Best Albums of 2012.’
‘Babel’ offered five singles including, I Will Wait.
