Miranda Leigh Lambert was born in Longview, Texas, on November 10, 1983. She was raised in a small town, Lindale, where her parents ran a private investigating agency. Miranda’s father was a songwriter and guitarist who played as part of a local country band, Contraband. She grew up listening to country music legends such as Guy Clark and Merle Haggard. Miranda’s interest in country music due to her family was hence inevitable.
The first time Lambert participated in a talent music show was at the age of ten. Her budding music career gained momentum when she performed at a weekly variety show, Johnnie High’s Country Music Revue in Arlington, Texas. The program was known to have helped launch the careers of numerous country musicians including Lee Ann Womack and LeAnn Rimes.
Soon Miranda Lambert began writing songs and learnt to play the guitar from her father. She formed her own band, Texas Pride, when she was only seventeen years old and by 2002, had become a popular act in the Texas country music circuit, playing gigs at various local restaurants.
The Big Break
In 2003, Miranda Lambert auditioned for the country music reality show, Nashville Star and having passed the audition moved to the music city to try her luck. The winner of the show was entitled to a recording contract among many other prizes. Although she finished as the second runner-up, her performances received much praise and attention, including that of Tracy Gershon who got Lambert to sign a deal with Sony Records. Her contract with the label marked the beginning of a career that contributed several classics to the country genre.
Lambert’s first single Me and Charlie Talking was a tale of puppy love. Released in 2003 via Epic Records, it was a modest hit. The song was co-written by Lambert and her father and appeared as the lead single on her debut studio record, Kerosene in 2005. The album comprised a total of twelve tracks, eleven of which were co-written by the singer herself. Kerosene debuted to a tremendous response, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and earning Lambert a nomination at the Grammys.
Following the success of her debut studio album, the singer hit the road with renowned music acts such as Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Toby Keith and George Strait. This earned Lambert much exposure and confidence to perform in a live setting.
Soon she began working on her second record, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which hit the shelves in May of 2007. Whereas the title track resonated well with former girlfriends everywhere, Gunpowder & Lead was a song about a woman who intends to shoot her abusive husband. Comprising a variety of songs, the record turned out to be massive hit and won Lambert an ACM Award in the category of Album of the Year.
Her following studio effort, Revolution, brought forth a more romantic side of Lambert with songs such as Love Song and Making Plans. The record consisted of fifteen songs, eleven of which were written by Lambert. Its second single White Liar was the singer’s first song to reach the top 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
In 2011, Lambert joined hands with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley to form the group Pistol Annies. The trio soon treated fans with a hit record titled Hell on Heels. Meanwhile, Lambert continued with her endeavors as a solo artist and released another smash hit album, Four The Record, in November, 2011. Five of the album’s singles reached the top of the music charts.
